Kesne walked swiftly down the stone hall. The heels of her knee-high leather boots clicking calmingly on the floor. Her hunter green half-skirt swished at her ankles over her black shorts. She took in a deep breath as she slowed to a stop outside tall iron gates covering wooden doors. They were thrown open unlike the wooden doors, however.
She pulled the handle as she turned it too. Light flooded the dark corridor and she blinked to adjust her pupils to the new brightness. She fixed her corseted, off-the-shoulder, black top to sit properly over the top hem of her belt and walked in. She folded her wings against her back to make them less daunting, but she did not put them away. She didn’t want to have them dismiss her so easily like usual and her wings were the only thing to keep their attention.
“Your Majesty.” She bowed as she approached the King. “I am here on behalf of your non-human people.”
“We already have a respresentative, girl.” Said an all too familiar voice to her right. She turned her head to face the man who spoke. “I am that person, so shut up and get out.”
Kesne scowled. “You are not proper to represent us. You are not a normal non-human being.”
“For that I must agree. However, I have talked with our kind and we all decided the best course of action.” With that the man pulled from under his cloak a shining sword.
“Persin! Put that away!” Kesne stepped forward, but Persin merely side-stepped around her and disappeared into the shadows.
Kesne looked around warily. Then her eyes flickered over to the King and his family on the dais. She ran towards them, but then they were gone, devoured by the darkness that hung from the cloth above their heads. She cried out and suddenly, as others took note, the room became engulfed in chaos. She stomped her foot firmly on the ground and then turned on her pointed heel and stalked off. As the doors closed behind her she heard whispers of war. She shuddered and headed for her home to prepare a search party.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The rolling hillside stretched out and into the sea. It became rocky as it met the cool water that licked at it, beckoning it to turn to sand. The sea breeze caressed the short, but healthy, green grass.
As Kesne walked up the dirt lane to her home, through the forest and out to the sea, she pulled out her dagger and a cloth, cleaning away some bandit blood. When it sparkled clearly she tucked both back away. Looking over towards the family mansion, she noticed how peaceful the land looked silver and bathed in moonlight.
She quickly approached the door. Opening it to reveal a sleeping household. She made her way over to the stairs and began climbing. Only then did she see the figure at the top. She stared for a moment, then recognition washed over her.
“Hello Ramsy. What are you doing in my house?” She smiled a bit and finished her treck up.
“He was just visiting.” Kesne turned to her sister at the top. She leaned against the wall in a creamy silk nightgown and sheer chiffon robe.
“I see.” Her voice was tense now. She kept it all hidden however as she remained smiling. “Well, it’s nice to see you.”
Ramsy nodded slowly and then ,after a long glance at Kesne with no other response, he started walking down the stairs. “You too, Kes.”
Kesne waved and sauntered to her room, sister in tow.
“So, what happened tonight with the King?” She asked, he face still holding a smug smile.
“He and his family were kidnapped.” Kesne shrugged and unloaded all her weapons onto her dresser.
“No?! Who?”
“Persin. Who else? I intend to start a search party of the finest hunters and fighters of our kind and human. I will not allow that scum to start a war over a past grievance that has been reconciled.”
“You actually think any humans would join with your kind?”
“Your kind?” Kesne spun around, feet now bare. “What do you mean my kind? Last I checked you were just like me except older and less adept with fighting and weapons.”
“Well I don’t plan to get into this whole mess, so it can just be your kind for current references.”
“You disgust me. Get out.” Kesne pointed her finger at the door with a growl.
“I disgust you? Or Ramsy and I together disgusts you? Angers you? Makes you jealous?” She grinned and pat her sister on the shoulder. “I can’t help that he goes for the more mature and pretty of the two. It’s only the nature of males.”
Kesne grabbed her sister’s wrist and snapped it back, breaking it. “Don’t touch me, traitor! Also, your love life does not bother me, Ramsy or not. He’s my friend, nothing more. What bothers me is your ideas and mood of how much better than me you are! You have washed out blond hair, grey eyes, a crooked nose, and you still think you are prettier than me! You get horrible grades, you hang out with trash, you constantly judge innocent and perfectly good people, and you act like queens when you’re merely leeches!”
Her sister Alorra grabbed back her wrist and snapped it straight. “pregnant dog!”
With that kesne watched Alorra storm out of the room and slam that door to her own.
Kesne changed into a green hooded tunic and black cotton shorts. She brushed her auburn-brown hair into a high ponytail, tied with a tight, black, cotton ribbon. She crossed to her bed, climbing in under the covers and sighed.
Her mind churned painfully with thoughts of her sister’s treachery. Her green-blue eyes tinted with rage. She tossed and turned, unable to find a comfortable position. Finally she layed on her stomach and gripped the matress so she would stop moving. She summon her stereo to her bedside table and turned it on with a wave from her free left hand.
A soothing melody began to play from her cd. It relaxed her visibly and mentally. She closed her eyes, and after twenty more minutes, fell asleep.
It was not a deep sleep, or a restful one, really. It consisted of several nightmares involving her killing her sister or her sister killing Ramsy. When she awoke in the morning, face stuck to the pillow beneath her from drool, she stretched and brought her knees to her chin. Her hair was plastered to her face and she attempted to fix it until she gave up and wrapped her arms around her legs.
A soft knock at the door forced her to speak. “Come in.”
It was her older brother Derion. He smiled softly, but sadly. “I heard your spat with Alorra. Is this about Ramsy?”
“She thinks it is, but it’s truly about he horrible two-faced self that deserts her people to stay out of a fight!” She sneered. “How can someone do that?”
“They’ll do anything when they have no sense of pride or family. I heard about your proposal to make a search party. I’ll help. I know how much it means to you , Kes.”
She nodded and smiled a bit. Then she stood and grabbed a towel from the armoire next to the door. “Thank you, Derion. I owe you.”
“No, you don’t. I owed you for all the times you lied for me. This can be my repayment.” He pat her shoulder as she passed him.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kesne toweled her hair dry now that she was dressed again. She wore green shorts and a black shoulder-cap style shirt. Her wings were clearly visible, a glistening green, black, and white. She traipsed down to the front room. Avoiding Alorra’s gaze she grabbed her brown, flat boots and slipped them on. Then she went to answer the door as the doorbell sounded.
Upon opening the door, her jaw clenched. Ramsy smiled akwardly at her.
“Hi, Kes.” He said with strain. “May I talk to you?”
“I suppose.” Kesne replied with a shrug.
She stepped outside, grabbing her chain necklace from the table against the wall. A locket and a broke sword pendant hung from it. “What is it?” She asked as she closed the door.
“I wanted to make sure you knew… nothing went on between Alorra and I…” He said uncertainly staring at her.
“Why should I care? You’re my best friend and nothing more Ramsy.” Her voice was bittersweet.
“I… I understand that… but you seemed… I mean… I… nevermind. Is Alorra here?” He averted his eyes to the ground, sounding a bit of a mix between disappointed and irritated.
“Your girlfriend’s inside.” She said as she began to walk off. “I have a date with a bunch of trackers and warriors.”
“Is this because the King and his family were kidnapped? Stop putting your life on the line for our opressors!”
“Stop? I can’t. I am bound to them. I must do service for them by law if I am to keep my family in their high position. Plus, they are not as bad as everyone thinks.” She grit her teeth.
Ramsy narrowed his eyes. “And you think Alorra is a traitor?”
“Are you accusing me, Ramsy?”
“I am. You are a human lover!”
Kesne slapped him and walked off. “And you are a poor man looking to dig his way to the top. No pride, no manners, no brains.”
Ramsy picked up a rock and threw it at her, but it fell short. She laughed breifly and disappeared into the woods. Ramsy continued on inside and sat, silently, with Alorra. She draped herself all over him, but he did not condone any actions she tried otherwise. He was in too bad of a mood now to be affectionate. He also never liked Alorra much to begin with. One thing Kesne was right about, he was looking to get to somewhere, hoping that somewhere was with her.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kesne scuffed along, churning up dirt as she went. She fumed, swearing and mumbling. She arrived at the town square. Some warriors and a hunter were already assembled. She waved them into her father’s tavern. Once inside she strode over to a table in a back room and sat at the head. They filed in, some more joining them. Once everyone was seated she smiled at a few familiar faces, and those of people she did not yet know.
“I take it you are all willing to aide me in finding the King and his family and returning them alive if possible. Otherwise, you would not be here.” She stated it, she did not ask.
They nodded in reply. Then one young man near her age spoke up. “Have you use for a paladin?”
Kesne looked over to him. She scanned his face and body for capability. He was quite handsome. His hair was a dark brown and his eyes a piercing blue. Her heart beat sped up a bit. “Are you any good at magic?”
“I am. I have minor control over both earth and fire.” He replied.
“Then we have much use for you indeed, sir.”
“I’m glad. So, how will we go about finding the King and his family? Do we know where Persin is?” He asked.
“We have two choices. The mountains, or the sea. I personally believe he is at the sea for a quick escape.”
“That would be most logical. Shall we split up?”
“Yes, you, myself, Arelic, and Derion shall go to the sea port. Callin, Seleborn, and Warren will go to the mountains. He will not be packing much for force. He’d want to be inconspicuous. All the rest of you may choose where you wish to go. We leave this evening. It is best to leave under the cover of darkness.”
With that Kesne stood and left. The paladin followed her closely. He stopped her when they were near the town square’s fountain.
“I am Falcon, Lady Kesne. As a paladin of the temple of Amaria, it is a pleasure to serve for you.”
“You… you serve under my mother?” Kesne swallowed a lump growing in her throat.
“Yes, Mi’lady. She herself sent me to watch after you. I believe she thought I’d protect you. I swear to, by the way.” Falcon smiled.
“I am sure she chose well.” It had been years since kesne had seen her mother. She was the Goddess Amaria, of the hunt and healing. She also ruled over minor statuses as the tiger, the stag, and shadows.
“She misses you, she told me to tell you.”
“Thank you and I’m sure she does. I miss her as well. I have to gather supplies now. Would you care to join me?” She smiled sweetly and motioned to the stores around the town.
“I’d love to, Mi’lady.”
“Please, just call me, Kesne.”
“Alright, Kesne.”
She smiled and entered the first store. The rest of the day went by quickly enough, picking up potions for healing, clothing, food, and weapons. She and Falcon talked a lot. They had much in common. As they returned to the tavern they had already started flirting with each other.
“Kesne.”
“Yes?”
“Nothing, just felt like saying your name.”
“Oh… well… ok…” She paused for a few minutes as they sat waiting for the rest in the room. “Falcon.”
“Yes?”
“Nothing, just thought I’d play the game.” She smirked and he returned it.
“Hmph.” He could not keep his eyes from her, that is, until the rest showed up. Then he dropped his eyes to the table.
A new face, however, familiar, was among the bunch. Ramsy entered and walked straight over to Kesne.
“I know what I said. However, if you won’t stop putting yourself at risk, I will come with you and make sure you don’t do anything stupid.” He was dead serious too.
She smiled a bit, but hid it. “Fine.”
Derion smirked and shook his head. He then slapped his hand on the table. “Alright, so let’s get moving then.”
Everyone stood and got into their respective groups, most people going to the mountains. Derion, Kesne, Falcon, Ramsy, and Arelic headed for the harbor. Derion walked next to his little sister. The others trailed behind to get to know one another.
“Kes, I see you forgave Ramsy awfully quickly.”
“He’s my best friend. I couldn’t stay mad at him forever.” She shrugged.
“He doesn’t like Alorra like that. He has never kissed her, nor allowed her to kiss him. Last night he was looking for you and ended up visiting me. Alorra had just found out he was here when he was leaving and you had arrived.” He elbowed her lightly.
“I don’t care. They can have eachother.”
“Kesne, stop being like father. We both know you are much more mother than him.”
“I just… whatever makes him happy, Derion.” She frowned a bit.
“I knew it. You like him. How sweet, my baby sister has a crush.”
“Shut up!” She elbowed him hard in the ribs.
Derion rubbed where she hit him with one hand while laughing. “Aww… you’re getting all defenseive. So it’s true!”
“Derion, I don’t like him. I like Falcon.” Kesne suddenly stopped short and covered her mouth. She couldn’t believe she’d just said that.
Derion grabbed her arm and dragged her with him. “Oooh, I see. A bit of a love V, we have going on here. Ramsy loves you, you love Falcon… Quite a dilema.”
“Ramsy… doesn’t love me… he might like me, but it isn’t love.”
“Whatever you say, sis.” He smiled and put an arm around her comfortingly. “We’ll catch you a nice boy. How’s that sound? You have to marry soon… we’ll make sure it lasts.”
“Yeah… right.” She kept her eyes down, thinking about Ramsy and Falcon. She had gotten herself stuck in quite a mess.
They reached the harbor just after dark. A ship waited for them in the south cove. It was a beauty, all shining and at least fifty feet long. A small crown was at the side as an insignia for who made it. On the back was the name. In glistening green was written, ‘Si Tu Me Vas’, or ‘If you leave me’.” It was ironic as they needed to use it once the King and his family were gone. However, all that aside, they climbed aboard and proceed to uncleat the mooring line. Soon they were a float and speeding along the coast.
